Brother Johnny Porter is a 1974 graduate of Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He was initiated into the Delta Beta chapter of Kappa Psi on August 30, 1971. Since his initiation, Brother Porter has dedicated himself to service to Kappa Psi and the community.
Brother Porter began his work on the Kappa Psi Executive Committee in 1978 after being appointed to the office of Graduate Member-at-Large. He was then elected Grand Historian-Ritualist (1985-1987), Grand Counselor (1987-1989), Grand Vice Regent (1989-1991), and Grand Regent (1991-1993). Following his service as Grand Regent, Brother Porter was appointed as Editor of THE MASK and served in that role for 15 years (1994-2009). In 2008, he was appointed as the Executive Director of Kappa Psi and continues serving in that role today.
Other notable Kappa Psi related roles include serving as the Grand Council Convention chair in 1985 and again in 1991. He served as Secretary for the Kappa Psi Foundation (2008-2015) and as a Kappa Psi Foundation board member (2008-2017). Brother Porter was a charter member of the Centennial Club in 1971, a founding member of the Bicentennial Club in 1980, and in 2019 included as a founding member of Society 1879. He has also served as a Province Supervisor to 7 different provinces during his tenure in the fraternity. He has over seen the installation of 45 new collegiate chapters and 12 graduate chapters during his time as a Kappa Psi executive committee member and along with 8 Grand Regents has overseen a growth in the size Kappa Psi not seen since the end of World War II.
In addition to Brother Porter’s long service to Kappa Psi, he has been a leader in numerous other professional organizations and local civic groups. He served as President and CEO of Turtle Creek Manor, a free mental health and addiction clinic in Dallas, Texas from 1997-2002. He was twice elected President of the Dallas County Pharmacist Association from 1987-1988 and again in 1996-1997. Brother Porter has been active in both the Professional Fraternity Association (PFA) and the Fraternity Communications Association (FCA) throughout his career. He was elected FCA president in 1999-2000 and previously served as Treasurer, Vice -President and Convention chair. In 2009, FCA recognized Brother Porter for his service with the Marilyn Simpson Ford Distinguished Service Award. Brother Porter also served as president for PFA (2004-2005) after previous service as Vice President and Treasurer. In 2021. Brother Porter had begun work on a book on the history of PFA. In 2017 he was also elected to membership in the Professional Fraternity Executive Association.
While completing his extensive service roles, Brother Porter maintained a 42-year career as a pharmacist for CVS. Throughout his career, he has served as a student preceptor for the University of Texas, University of Houston, Texas Southern University, Texas Tech University, and South University. In 2011, he was awarded one of the top pharmacist honors at CVS, the Paragon Award. This award recognizes achievement of outstanding results while demonstrating the purpose of helping people on their path to better health. Brother Porter retired from CVS in 2016, which allowed him additional time for travel and his woodworking hobbies.
Brother Porter is married to his beautiful wife of 18 years, Kathy, and is the proud father of 2 sons, 2 stepsons and 1 stepdaughter and the grandfather of 8 wonderful grandchildren.
